Proper Nutrition is the One Medicine that Doesn’t Need a Prescription

Dr. Shawn Mulvihill

The role of nutrition in the health of our animal companions is the most critical component for preventing disease and preserving youth and vitality.  Unfortunately, it is often one that is commonly ignored or downplayed by the veterinary profession.

A well-balanced diet should be designed for the individual based on species (dog, cat, rabbit, etc.), breed, age, activity level, and any underlying medical or physical problems, such as arthritis or kidney problems.

Fortunately, there is a huge spectrum of commercial diets available now that are formulated with a variety of different protein sources, calorie content and nutrient profiles. There are also many forms of these foods, such as dry kibble, canned, freeze-dried, frozen, raw, as well as home-prepared recipes.

The right diet for your pet is based on all of these variables and your pet’s preferences, although one of the major problems plaguing the majority of our friends is obesity.  At least 50% of animals seen here at our clinic tend to be overweight and the lack of proper exercise and poor quality grain-based diets are the major culprits.  Also disease processes such as cancer and kidney failure can be treated with diet as an addition to standard treatments.

Nutritional counseling and weight loss programs are a hallmark of our practice and your companions will benefit from a dietary review for promoting better health and longer life.
