What is acupuncture? By Dr. Shawn Mulvihill
Acupuncture is an ancient healing art form used originally in Asia to stimulate the innate energy in the body called Qi. It has been used for hundreds of years by European and Western societies after it was brought from the Chinese via Jesuit priests returning from missionary work.
What is it good for?
Today, acupuncture is used in this country by practitioners of human and animal medicine for such common problems as:
-Arthritis and mobility problems
-Joint inflammation
-Spondylosis-spinal arthritis
-Digestive problems-nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gas
-Immune Stimulation
-Kidney and Liver problems
-Reducing the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy
-Increasing overall heath and energy
-Some skin conditions and allergies
-Appetite stimulation
-Dystocia and whelping
-Heart and Lung issues
-Seizures, tremors, and stroke
How does it work?
Acupuncture works by placing needles along precise pathways on the body called meridians or channels. These needles either stimulate or inhibit the flow of energy along these meridians.
Studies have shown increased electrical resistance in these regions and local and central effects that help to alleviate pain, increase blood flow and promote healing.
What should you expect?
A series of treatments, usually 3-4, are necessary to see positive results. Early visits are often only 3-7 days apart and require a commitment in order to judge whether the animal is benefiting. Some pets respond quickly, others take a few weeks, and a very few do not seem to be helped by this therapy. Treatments are individualized to include dry needles, aquapuncture, electro-stimulation with needles, and massage at acupuncture points.
Some soreness can be expected in the first 24-48 hours after treatment followed by improvement in symptoms.
